The Geographical Indicators (GI) tag refers to any indication that identifies a product (agricultural, natural or manufactured) as belonging to a particular place where the quality, reputation and the like are attributable to its area of origin.

By registering on the index, these popular products indigenous to a particular place can be differentiated from similar, competing products. Often at times, it allows the producer to claim a premium for genuine products.

India enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection ) Act, in 1999 and it came into force in 2003.

There are six categories of GIs- Agricultural, Manufactured, Handicraft, Foodstuff, Textile and Natural Goods.
