  • The National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) was constituted under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
  • It comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • NIDM is a premier institute and has been assigned nodal responsibilities for human resource development, capacity building, training, research, documentation and policy advocacy in the field of Disaster Management.
  • It works as a think tank for the Government by providing assistance in policy formulation.

The objectives of NIDM are :

  1. To undertake quality research covering both natural and human induced disasters, with a multi-hazard approach.
  2. To work as a National Resource Center for the Central and State governments in the country through effective knowledge management and sharing of best practices.
  3. To professionalize disaster risk reduction and emergency management in India and other neighboring countries by developing an independent cadre of professionally trained emergency and mitigation managers.
  4. To promote formal training and education for Disaster Management in India and in the region.
  5. To build working partnerships with the Government, universities, NGOs, corporate bodies and other national and international Institutes of eminence.
  6. To link learning and action by building a synergy NIDM between institutions and professionals in the sector.
