Jaipur, the Pinkcity, is the capital city of
Rajasthan. One of the first planned city of the world, Jaipur is popular for
its forts, wide roads, Choupars (Squares), Choukadies (Sectors), Havelies
and street markets. This largest city of Rajasthan was founded by Maharaja
Sawai Jai Singh II, the rural of Amber in 1727. Today Jaipur is the 12th
biggest city of India in term of population.
The city was planned by Bengali architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya. Old city
is surrounded by a parkota (wall). There are many darwajas (Gates) which
connect old city with new. Main gates are Chandpole, Surajpole, Tripolia,
Sanganeri gate, Ajmeri gate and Jorawar Singh gate. City is planned in a peculiar
grid system. Streets are laid out in nine chokadies. Each chokadi has small
streets crossing each other at 90 degree angle.
Old city has many places of tourist interest like Jantar mantar(
Observatory), Hawa mahal, City Palace, Sarga Suli, Govind Dev temple. First
residence of king- Nahargarh is situated on top of a hill adjacent to city.
Amer or Amber fort, the ancestor capital is also very popular among
tourists.
Jaipur is well connected with Delhi by air, train and bus routes. Today
Jaipur is one of the biggest business center of north India.

Highway 8 and 11 passes through the city. Rajasthan State Road
Transport Corporation (RSRTC)
is official transport facilitator of the state. It runs Volvo, Air
