- It is the oldest Para Military Force in the country and was formed in 1835 as “Cachar Levy”. After several name changes, the name “Assam Rifles” was finally adopted in 1917.
- Headquarter- Shillong
- It maintains internal security in the North East.
- It also guards the Indo-Myanmar* border since 2002.
- It is under the administrative control of MHA but operates under the Army.
- It is headed by Army officers.
